Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness Training

The Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness training course is a half-day course that provides essential knowledge for handling and working with this challenging substance and covers the properties of the substance, as well as the first aid treatments and strategies to be followed by accidental exposure.

Our Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness training course can be delivered either within the workplace or at a suitable venue in your area.

What is Hydrofluoric Acid?

Hydrofluoric acid is a solution of hydrogen fluoride (HF) in water. It is a precursor to almost all fluorine compounds, including pharmaceuticals such as fluoxetine (Prozac), diverse materials such as PTFE (Teflon), and elemental fluorine itself. It is a colourless solution that is highly corrosive, capable of dissolving many materials, especially oxides. Its ability to dissolve glass has been known since the 17th century. As a consequence of its high reactivity toward glass and moderate reactivity toward many metals, hydrofluoric acid is usually stored in plastic containers.

Hydrogen fluoride gas is an acute poison that may immediately and permanently damage lungs and the corneas of the eyes. Aqueous hydrofluoric acid is a contact-poison with the potential for deep, initially painless burns and ensuing tissue death. By interfering with body calcium metabolism, the concentrated acid may also cause systemic toxicity and eventual cardiac arrest and fatality, after contact with as little as 160 cm2 (25 square inches) of skin.

Who will benefit from Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness Training?

This course is ideal for anyone working with, responsible for, or adjacent to activities involving Hydrofluoric Acid. This is essential knowledge for these groups, prior to any contact with HF, and will make candidates aware of the hazards posed by this challenging substance, along with the pertinent steps to take should there be an adverse incident.

Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness Training Assessment

This is an awareness course, but knowledge is validated by an examination consisting of 15 multiple choice questions.

Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness Training – Programme

  • What is Hydrofluoric Acid?

  • Legal duties & COSHH

Hydrofluoric Acid Awareness Training Certification

Successful completion of the course and the exam will certificate the candidate in awareness of the risks posed by HF, and the contingencies to be followed to deal with incidents.

Hydrofluoric Acid Requalification

No entry qualifications are required of this course. It is strongly recommended that the awareness of hydrofluoric acid is refreshed every three years.
